Notes
|
The Red-Tailed Barracuda, or Acestrorhynchus altus, is another in the line of predatory Pike Characins from the Amazon. At an adult length of 8 - 9 inches, it is slightly smaller than most other Acestrorhynchus species, but should be cared for in much the same way.
As a carnivorous predator, the Red-Tailed Barracuda should not be kept with any fish small enough to fit into its large mouth. They will usually mind their own business towards tankmates of equal size, and actually shouldn't be kept with overly aggressive tankmates. Lots of open swimming space is a must, as well as dim lighting and floating plants to keep this skitterish fish calm. They are an excellent and interesting addition to the aquarium when giving the proper living condiations.
Live foods may be necessary unless the fish is weened on to store bought meaty foods from an early age.
Breeding and sexing information is unavailable.
