Notes
|
The Golden Dorado is a very large predatory characin from South America, that is typically too big for home aquaria and best left to public aquariums. In its native waters this impressive species is fished for sport.
Juveniles become available for purchase from time to time, often carrying a price of over $100.00 US. They grow rapidly on a carnivorous diet and may need to be fed live foods exclusively.
Obviously a very large aquarium is required to house such a beast. Owners should provide as much open swimming space as possible, and keep the fish in dimmer lighting that usual, as it can startle easily. Tankmates must be able to fend for themselves, but shouldn't be overly-aggressive, either.
If you choose to keep Salminus brasiliensis, be prepared for its growth potential. This is truly one magnificent fish if properly cared for.
